I have long believed that a unique aspect of this sport is one's ability to clearly measure improvement over the course of time. At the beginning of this season, I recall mentioning to other coaches the work ethic and focus that this years team brings to their daily practice. Results like these from Grain Valley help demonstrate the correlation between attributes like focus and commitment to the results that follow. In total, Rooster athletes combined for a total of 26 personal bests and Chicks athletes wracked up 18 new personal bests!
The Roosters sprint crew accounted for a large number of the 26 personal bests with many of the athletes once again tackling the 100m, 200m, and 400m dashes. One highlight from that series of races was freshman Johnathan Rivera taking two seconds off his personal best time placing 3rd overall 58.9 seconds. The Chicks sprinters were not to be outdone with a slew of PRs highlighted by Jessica Ross once again lowering her time to 47.6 seconds. The distance squad mostly used this meet to focus on speed and competed at the 800m distance. Aubrey Scott used a powerful kick in the last 200m of the race to take 1st overall. She led Kelly, Megan, and Angela who all set personal best times in that event. Landon Fatino went head-to-head against Grain Valley's best and ended up with a 2nd place finish and a new personal best at that distance. In the 1600m, Carson Case proved that he was capable of better times by dropping his PR by 22 seconds! He finished 7th overall with a time of 5:40. In the field, Garrett Schick continued to impress with wins in the long and triple jump. Several newcomers to the sport set first time marks or extended their distance from last week's meet at Ray-Pec. Both Clay Froehlich and Evan Howell bested their Triple Jump and High Jump Marks. In addition, Bryce McGinnish vaulted to new heights of 8 feet 6 inches. Lindsey Dobson had a successful day scoring in the long jump and beating her personal record in the triple jump. Coach Hamilton's athletes continued their tradition of throwing heavy object far distances and winning events. Pleasant Hill athletes won 5/6 throwing events highlighted by Ben Cox's double gold in the shot put and discus, extending his personal records in both. Brady Schlesener set a respectable mark to win the boys javelin throw. Chloe Bloom and Allee Brattin once again traded first and second place in the girls shot put and discus. Weather permitting, the varsity squads will be traveling to Odessa this Friday for our first invitational meet. We had a wonderful day to open the 2019 track and field season contrary to prior weather reports. The Pleasant Hill Roosters and Chicks traveled to Peculiar, MO to face Ray-Pec and Ruskin in an open tri meet.
From the distance perspective, many of our veteran athletes used this meet as a training session. Our returning athletes completed a longer timed run prior to their warm ups which likely took some gas out of their legs but they still placed well! Our newcomer athletes have shown tremendous growth throughout the last four weeks of training. Both Kelly Anderson and Colin Paris opened the season with 30+ second improvements in their 1600m time from the beginning of the season! In the sprints, many athletes had the daunting task of racing the 100m, 400m, and 200m. Both the Roosters and Chicks impressed in the 400m even with a 100m under their belt. The Chicks went 1-2-4-5 and had all four ladies under 1:11. The Roosters set five personal records in that race led by Mason Winfree. In the 300m hurdles, Jessica Ross improved her personal best to 49.83 after winning the 100m hurdles. In the field, the throwers and jumpers proved that they were ready to compete with a slew of PRs from returning athletes. Allee Brattin and Chloe Bloom both PRed in the shot put placing 1st and 2nd in that event. In the discus, Chloe and Allee traded 1st and 2nd place with Allee throwing a PR. The Roosters discus throwers went 2-3-4 with all boys over 129 feet. Cameron Parker led the squad and improved his PR by over 10 feet in one of the best series of his career. Lone Jack transfer Ben Cox was a welcome addition increasing his PR in the shot put to 42-1. In the pole vault, William Markham cleared a 10-0 foot height that he had previously broke his ankle attempting last season. All in all, this was a great first day for our team. We have a lot of young athletes and a hard working squad. It will be exciting to see what kind of improvements lay ahead.
