Coach Scott and I are proud of the hard work that both squads put in this season.
In the boy's district race the team got out hard and gave it everything they had. 4/7 boys ran SB times with two others just seconds off their PR. The boys finished 3rd behind Warrensburg and Bolivar who are both ranked in the top 4 teams in the state. Jerod Rottinghaus, Landon Fatino, and Shawn Gallagher will represent the Roosters individually at state next week. The girls had a fantastic showing with 6/7 athletes earning PRs or SBs! Aubrey Scott raced a tough group of Bolivar, Pembroke Hill, and Warrensburg girls to earn her first of many trips to the state meet. In the JV race Keagon Madison continued his streak of PRs and is one of the few athletes I have known to PR literally every race of an entire season. Parker Elkins demonstrated great improvement by shaving over a minute and a half from his personal best. Thank you to the seniors who have displayed great character and leadership. You will be truly missed. Best of luck to the four athletes competing at state next weekend! For the first time, the MRVC Conference Meet was divided into two divisions splitting the East and West. Both sides competed in the same race but were split up electronically using the timing chips. The Chick’s squad was confident leading up to the race that they would be able to produce some hardware. Early on, Grain Valley’s top two runners broke away from the field with Aubrey Scott and Jacey Faust in pursuit. Aubrey Scott experienced uncharacteristic pain and fell behind the pace falling to fifth place but Jacey Faust was able to make up the difference by running a gutsy performance placing 3rd. Ashtyn Dickens had a break out race narrowly beating the 3-5 pack of Grain Valley to finish 6th overall. Jadyn Dowdy held on and battled up the last hill to maintain her 10th place spot. Those four ladies earned All-Conference Honors for their finishes. Rachel Denney rounded out the Chick’s top five by placing 16th. Grain Valley was the MRVC Girl’s Champion with a score of 24 points. The Chicks closely followed them with a 2nd place finish scoring 35 points. Oak Grove finished third with 85 points.
The Rooster’s squad was the strong favorite going into the race but the individual title was up for grabs. Excelsior Spring’s Michael Rebello had been running well all year and so we set our sights on having the front of our pack pace off of him and see what happened. Going into the second lap of the two lap course, Landon Fatino and Jerod Rottinghaus pulled even with Rebello. The course wrapped around a section difficult for spectators to get to and when they came around an open turn it was Fatino pulling ahead with Rottinghaus following closely behind. Fatino surged ahead to a personal record time and earned the individual conference champion title as a freshman. Jerod Rottinghaus was runner up besting Rebello by 7 seconds. Desmond Ewing (5th), Shawn Gallagher (6th), Will Pryor (9th), and Evan Jacobs (10th) all finished in the top 10 earning All-Conference Honors. The Rooster won the meet with an impressive 23 points. Second place went to Excelsior Springs with a score of 72. The Grain Valley Eagles placed third with a score of 74. Following the MRVC races, Richmond held the Richmond Invite which featured 86 runners from 10 complete teams in the area. The JV Squad took on this challenge and showed that future of Pleasant Hill XC has a lot to look forward to. Dakota Middleton led the team with a 15th place finish. Keagon Madison (19th) and Joel Conway (22nd) both had personal record performances breaking the 20 minute barrier on a challenging course. Those three Roosters were medalist in the Varsity Division. Kolton Kincaid and Parker Snow finished fast and narrowly missed the medals placing 28th and 30th overall. The Rooster’s JV placed 4th out of the 10 schools. In the JV Race, Noah Dowdy, Andrew Conway, Parker Elkins, and Carson Case all earned medals by placing in the top 20. Andrew Conway, in the last race of his high school career, added to his medal by earning a lifetime personal best on the course. Emma Mueller and Megan Swinney earned medals for the Chicks. The JV boy’s squad got out conservatively with most of the pack near medaling contention. In the second and third miles they began to surge around corners and attacked hills passing groups of runners. Dakota Middleton led the JV boys with an exciting finish line kick that earned him 2nd place and a new PR of 19:00. Kolton Kincaid, Keagon Madison and Parker Snow all posted top 10 finishes. Joel Conway was the 5th man finishing in 14th place. The JV Boys came away with the win over Warrensburg, Grain Valley, Pembroke Hill, and Smith-Cotton. One of my goals as a coach is always to have the best JV squad in the conference as that demonstrates our depth and commitment. Today, the JV Boys defeated Grain Valley’s JV for the first time in my coaching career and took down two of the most competitive teams in our district.
On the girl’s side, Emma Mueller and Megan Swinney both finished in the top 25 earning medals. Megan Swinney and Emily Perisho ran outstanding races with both girls shaving off over 1 minute from their season best. The next race was the varsity boys. The storyline for this race was to see how the Roosters, ranked 4th in the state, would compete against Warrensburg who was 2nd in the state coming in. Warrensburg showed early on that they were not messing around with all 7 of their athletes ahead of our #1 runner. Shawn Gallagher led the Roosters through the mile followed closely by our pack. Jerod Rottinghaus and Landon Fatino led the charge to pass as many Warrensburg runners as they could. In the end, the roosters put all five runners in the top 19 positions but it was not enough to make up for Warrensburg’s impressive 1-2 punch. The team lost to Warrensburg by 11 points but did manage to beat rival Grain Valley for a third time this season and also took down district competitor Pembroke Hill for the second time this season. We have some workouts planned in the next few weeks that will sharpen our boys and girls to prepare for the district meet. The boys have a game plan that, if executed, could put them ahead of Warrensburg at the district meet. The girl’s showed tremendous improvement in their pacing during their race. Up front, Aubrey Scott chased down a pack of talented runners finishing 5th overall. Behind her, the girl’s pack executed a game plan of starting off near season best pace and maintaining it throughout the race. Ashtyn Dickens and Jadyn Dowdy both ran personal best times while Savannah DeMeyer and Tabitha Graham tooked a large chunk of time off of their season best. The girl’s squad placed 6 out of 9 teams in a race containing several ranked teams from multiple classes. Their improvement in the last few races has moved them into contention for the MRVC conference title. The Chick’s goal is to bring home hardware from next Wednesday’s conference meet. The course featured great views and better than expected weather but features some massive hills in the last half of the race. Our girls got things rolling in the first race of the day. Aubrey Scott led the team while using the meet as a workout to improve her closing speed. The rest of the girls ran as a pack pushing each other up a challenging last hill. During that hill, the girl’s showed off their fitness by passing a large group from other schools. The Chick’s squad placed 5th out of 11 teams scoring 144 points.
Our #8-13 boys lined up in the varsity race against competition from 15 other schools. Kolton Kincaid was the top finisher for the Roosters finishing 22nd. Dakota Middleton finished 25th. Both of those athletes were medalist. Keagon Madison, Joel Conway, and Parker Snow each put in one of their best performances of the season to help the Rooster squad finish 7th out of 15 schools scoring 174 points. Neither of the JV squads had enough runners to compete as a team but the runners put on a good showing with 5/6 athletes taking home some hardware. RJ Hughes, JR Tabony, and Carson Case medaled on the boy’s side. Sandy Aguilar had the highest finish of the day placing 10th overall in the JV division and Megan Swinney also took home a medal. The Roosters and Chicks squads have a nice week and a half off to prepare for the Warrensburg Invite which will be shortly followed by the MRVC Conference Meet. The boys are strong favorites to take home the MRVC Title and the girls look poised to defend their second place finish from last year. Perfect conditions and a challenging course played to our strengths helping our boys show early on that they were not messing around. By the 1200m mark, the Rooster squad had five runners in the top 18 positions and they continued to move up from there. Landon Fatino broke away from the pack shortly before the mile mark and didn’t look back. The freshmen was the #1 finisher for the Roosters placing 3rd overall. Desmond Ewing and Jerod Rottinghaus worked together and made their way up to 5th and 7th respectively. Evan Jacobs and Shawn Gallagher rounded out the top 5 placing 11th and 15th. Their performance earned them 1st out of 17 teams with an impressive score of 41 points. Rivals Grain Valley finished 2nd with 73 points. Smith Cotton was 3rd with 96, district competitor Pembroke Hill finished 4th with 129, and MRVC challenger Excelsior Springs was 5th with 190 points.
In the girl’s race, Aubrey Scott took advantage of the hills to move up from 8th at the mile to 4th place where she would finish. In her second 5k, Jacey Faust cruised to an 8th place finish and showed a lot of potential as she learns to manage her pace. Seniors Ashtyn Dickens and Rachel Denney continue to lead the remaining pack of Chicks with a 34th place and 46th place finish. Jadyn Dowdy, returning from illness, rounded off the top 5 with a 49th place finish and is getting back her fitness day-by-day. The girl’s squad placed 5th behind Grain Valley, Pembroke Hill, Cameron, and Lee's Summit. In the JV race, the boy’s squad practiced the pack running that the varsity team is earning its name for. By working together, Keagon Madison and Parker Snow moved their way up throughout the race finishing 3rd and 4th overall. Reduced numbers due to a band competition left the Chicks with only one finisher in the JV girls race. Bethany Larkins made the most of it by breaking her old personal record by 1 minute and 15 seconds.
