The mud has dried from the 2018 Cross Country Championships held for the final year in Jefferson City, MO. A full Roosters squad competed alongside Aubrey Scott against the best that the state had to offer.
Conditions for the Class 3 girls’ race were not ideal in the early morning. Temperatures were in the mid to high 40s with a slight drizzle and cold breeze making it difficult for the athletes to get warmed up. Aubrey Scott toed the line and got to a solid start in her second state meet. She reached the mile mark in 6:35 and then began working her way through the pack. She was able to gain 10 places in the final mile and did so with a smile on her face as she sprinted to a 62nd place finish in 21:58. On paper the Roosters came in to the meet ranked 11th out of the 16 teams. Individually, Landon Fatino was the top ranked Rooster coming in at 24th with Tobin Wise ranked 83rd and Desmond Ewing ranked 94th. The Roosters showed up in a big way with each athlete outperforming their predicted placing. Sophomore Landon Fatino etched his first of many All-State appearances with a spectacular 15th place finish. Landon’s time of 17:12 was the second fastest by a Class 3 sophomore and he will return next year as the 9th fastest runner among Class 3 athletes. Desmond Ewing ran his best race of the season fighting his way to a 35th place finish (59 places better than predicted). Tobin, Will, Joel, Dakota, and Keagon all ran solid performances that helped the Roosters squad finish an outstanding 7th place in Class 3. This team has been an incredible group of athletes to work with. I am extremely proud of their accomplishments and efforts this season. I hope I have challenged them in the same way that they have challenged me. Because of them I have become a better coach, a better athlete, and a better person.
