The varsity squads traveled to Jefferson Barracks Park to face off against some of the best competition from the other side of the state. For the boys, this race served as a measuring stick with us competing against Fulton (3rd at last year’s state meet), Helias (4th at last year’s state meet), and perennial powerhouse Herculaneum. Jefferson Barracks Park is often touted as one of the hardest and hilliest courses in MO and with nearly record high temps in the St. Louis area, we knew this one would be tough.
The boy’s had a conservative start through the first mile but made big moves in the 2nd mile to move up in the pack. The last mile was all guts and mental strength as the athletes gave it their all to pass as many runners as they could. When the dust settled (literally), the Pleasant Hill Roosters were declared the Class 3 Meet Champions. Scores were Pleasant Hill (81), Fulton (98), Helias (111), and Herculaneum (128). With this win, the boys are currently ranked in the top 4 teams in the subjective Milesplit rankings. They will need to work on bringing down their average finish time and most importantly remain healthy as they enter the October and November racing season. In the girl’s race Aubrey Scott bravely moved to the front of the race mixing it up with #1 ranked Helias Catholic. She held on to the chase pack through two and a half miles before fading to 8th place. Aubrey has received honorable mention in the Milesplit State Rankings and has her eyes set on a top 25 finish at the state meet. Ashtyn Dickens, Rachel Denney, and Savannah DeMeyer survived the heat and hills turning in strong performances while gaining valuable experience for the conference meet held at Richmond High School. Due to Homecoming conflicts, the girl’s squad did not score as a team. From 9/19/17:
We were approached with the opportunity to run our JV boys at the Lone Jack Invitational a few days prior to the meet. After a team meeting discussing availability, we jumped on the idea as our JV was unable to travel to the weekend meet in St. Louis. At the meet, our JV boys competed in the varsity division against five complete teams and runners from 9 small schools. Only one of our athletes had varsity experience going into the race but each athlete rose to the occasion and ran incredibly well on a hot and muggy afternoon. Dakota Middleton and Kolton Kincaid made strong moves in the second mile to move up to 3rd and 4th place respectively. Freshmen Keagon Madison had a break out race PRing on the tough two lap course and battled a runner from Knob Noster to move up into 9th place. Each of those three athletes finished on the awards stand. Joel Conway and RJ Hughes rounded out the top 5 runners from Pleasant Hill. The team narrowly missed 1st place against a strong Class 1 squad from Kingsville. Team scores were: Kingsville 40 Pleasant Hill 44 Knob Noster 62 Lone Jack 71 Harrisonville 121 In the JV race, sophomore Parker Snow put on a show in his first race back from injury with a 48 second margin of victory over teammate Noah Dowdy. Carson Case finished 5th, Andrew Conway was 2nd, and Parker Elkins rounded out the Rooster pack finishing in 9th place. The JV race featured two complete teams with the Pleasant Hill Roosters beating the host Lone Jack 24 to 35. The boy’s field was comprised of 47 full teams and the girl’s field had 44 teams from Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. With the size of the competition and being one of the smallest schools at the meet, our focus was to improve our overall times and finish fast. Despite the heat, we still had 10 runners record personal bests and another 10 runners record season bests.
The boy’s placed 21st out of 47 teams which was the highest place of any class 3 school from MO and 3rd overall when comparing schools of similar size. The heat played a factor and impacted a few of our varsity guys but freshman Landon Fatino came up big leading the boy’s finishers with a time of 17:30.4. His time is the 2nd fastest in the state by any class 3 frosh and 11th for freshmen all classes. Pack running was the theme once again with our 1-4 finishers finishing 7 seconds apart. Will Pryor rounded off the top 5 with a finishing time of 18:11. The girl’s team was once again down on their luck with their #2 and #3 runners battling illness on the sidelines. That didn’t slow down the girls who competed though with 6 of the 7 recording PRs or SBs. Aubrey Scott led the team with a strong move in the 2nd mile to a 46th place finish in a time of 20:20. Like Fatino, her time ranks her 9th in the state all classes for freshmen and 4th against class 3 frosh. Ashtyn Dickens finished 2nd on the team in a time of 24:26. Rachel Denney provided great pacing and leadership to help pack up our 3-5 runners who finished with an 11 second spread. By the time the JV races rolled around, the heat index was in the mid 90s. While that is not unusual this time of year, it was by far the hottest temps these kids have raced in all season. The temps were so high that the course had water stations where volunteers were splashing athletes with cold water mid race to help bring down their body temperature. Freshmen Keagon Madison led the boys in these tough conditions by PRing in a time of 20:53. Sophomore Megan Swinney led our three finishers on the girls side with a SB time of 29:53. Next week our varsity squads travel to St. Louis to compete at Jefferson Barracks Park in the Hancock Invitational. The course is often described as one of the hardiest and hilliest courses in the state. The boys and girls will face off against a slew of teams from the podium at last year’s state meet. This presented a unique opportunity for our squads to compete against some of the best and biggest schools around while still being rewarded for our performance against similar sized schools.
Going into the boy’s race, our focus was to test our fitness and see how we matched up against Helias Catholic from Jefferson City. They placed 4th at the state meet, just 4 points ahead of us last year, and did not graduate any runners so we knew they would be tough. After the first mile, I noticed that we were aligned really well to challenge for the win. Our pack of four continued to move up and began making moves against Helias runners. At the two mile, we had moved our top 4 ahead of their number 3 runner. Evan Jacobs played a critical role as the 5th man passing two Helias runners in the final mile, ultimately giving us the win. The final score was 36 to 39, with Class 1 powerhouse Hermitage placing 3rd with 103 points. The boys impressed me with their ability to dig deep and push their limits early on. Despite their inexperience at the 5k distance, the varsity girls kept things rolling with a 2nd place performance in a field of 7 small school teams. This was a great accomplishment given that the Chick’s top 5 finishers had never competed at the 5k distance. Aubrey Scott and Jacey Faust led the charge placing 2nd and 10th, respectively. Jadyn Dowdy, Ashtyn Dickens, and Rachel Denney rounded off the top 5 finishers for the team. The girl’s learned valuable racing tactics and gained a better idea of how to improve their pacing in the race. Both the JV Boys and JV Girls had solid performances on the hotter part of the morning. As temperatures rose, the times slowed down a bit but the boys and girls still competed well. Dakota Middleton, Kolton Kincaid, and RJ Hughes used strong last miles to move themselves up on to the medal stand. Similarly, Sandy Aguilar and Tabitha Graham hung on to their pace for a 4th and 7th place finish. This upcoming Saturday the team travels to the Joplin Stampede. Joplin’s course features one of the fastest 5ks in the state of Missouri. Our athletes will face off in the large school division with the hopes of getting out fast and setting new PRs. The newly designed course featured shallow inclines and a lot of nice downhill stretches with only a few sections of poor footing and two hairpin turns to slow athletes down. This allowed our athletes to run some fast times and build confidence in our fitness as we take on the 5k distance next week.
The varsity girls were not at full strength with an injury in one of the top 5 runners and another athlete out of town. However, seniors Savannah DeMeyer and Rachel Denney stepped up and ran strong races. The team came away with a 3rd place finish behind powerhouses Ray-Pec and Warrensburg with medal efforts from Aubrey Scott, Jadyn Dowdy, and Ashtyn Dickens. The boys impressed with a fast pack that included four runners who broke 11 minutes in the two mile distance (Jerod Rottinghaus, Desmond Ewing, Landon Fatino, and Shawn Gallagher). Evan Jacobs rounded out the top 5 with a time of 11:09. Like the girls, the Roosters were beat handily by Ray-Pec and Warrensburg but are eager to lengthen the race to 5 kilometers. All four girls in the JV race ran faster this week than at the Warrensburg Invite! Alyssa Ziegelbein took off 1:30 from her personal record (PR). Bethany Larkins improved her PR by 1:14. Since they were missing their 5th runner, they were unable to score as a team. Six of the ten JV boys posted faster times than last week. JR Tabony improved his PR by 1:27. Parker Elkins ran an outstanding race to improve his lifetime PR by 2:25. The JV Boys placed 4th out of 7 teams.
