The Joe Falcon Invite at Belton High School provided our athletes with some of the toughest competition we will face until the district and sectional meets.
The distance team did not run a 4x800m so that athletes could focus on setting personal best times in their individual events. Tobin Wise got things rolling with a huge PR in the 1600m with a time of 4:54.44. Counting XC, that makes him the 6th athlete this year to go sub 5 minutes at that distance. His time ranks him 13th among other Class 4 Frosh in the state. Aubrey Scott put together even pacing and a strong finishing kick to improve her season best time in the 1600m to 5:35.20. That time ranks her 3rd in Class 4 among Frosh and 23rd overall. Desmond Ewing, Parker Snow, and Aubrey Scott all improved their personal best times in the open 800s. The highlight of the night came at the end with Jerod Rottinghaus breaking the school record in the 3200m run. He ran 9:40.83 to eclipse Matt Haffner's time of 9:44. Of note is the consistent improvement that Jerod has made throughout his career. He has showed great dedication and commitment in many aspects of his training from weighlifting, to offseason training, and modifying his diet. The biggest improvement he has made this season is his mindset which is evident in the way he races. As a Frosh, Jerod ran 13:15 for 3200m, 11:22 as a Soph, 10:28 as a Junior, and currently 9:40. I am confident that he has bigger and better times in his future. The Roosters and Chicks distance had a fantastic day at the Clinton Invite. The meet started with a victory in the 4x800m. Desmond broke through and ran a big PR split. Rottinghaus and Jacobs kept the baton in first place handing off to freshman anchor, Tobin Wise. Belton's top runner covered the distance to Tobin in the first 300 meters and flew past him going in to the bell lap. Tobin kept his composure, ran his own pace, and found a powerful kick to surge past the Belton athlete who was locking up from his first lap efforts.
Aubrey Scott continued her successful mile campaign with another victory in the 1600m. Landon Fatino, coming off a minor injury this week, placed 4th with a new PR of 4:46. Both Desmond and Tobin PRed in the open 800m earning 3rd and 6th place respectively. They are learning how to pace themselves and will be a force to deal with at the conference meet. Jerod, Aubrey, and Evan all had outstanding 3200m runs despite the wind picking up just before the start. Jerod ran splits of 456-458 to break 10 for the second time in a row. His 9:55 earned him his first individual 2nd place of the season. Evan powered to a new PR of 10:46. Aubrey debuted in 3200m going head to head against Clinton's number one runner winning in a time of 12:50. On the distance side of the track, the boys 4x800m got things rolling with a season best 8:33.07. On that relay, all 4 boys set personal records. Madison Roach continued the PR streak by running a huge PR of 6:41, beating her old record by 10 seconds. Jerod Rottinghaus handily won the mile and is eagerly awaiting the tougher competition that we usually see later in our season. Desmond moved up to the 1600 running a season best time and said "that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be." Look for him to burn a fast mile later this season. Tobin Wise earned 4th place with a time of 2:11 in the 800m despite running the last lap with his shoe untied and almost falling off. His 2:10 in the open 800 ranks 6th for Class 4 among the frosh class. Evan Jacobs and Parker Snow concluded the night with a great performance in the 3200m. Evan hung on to the leader as long as he could and earned 2nd place just a second off his PR. Parker Snow hung tough in the varsity field breaking the 3200m PR he set in yesterday's JV meet. Temperatures were a little cool but the lack of wind and tough competition pushed several athletes to a new PR. We only took 11 athletes to compete against a field of 12 schools but came away 10 PRs (some athletes PRed in more than one event).
On the distance side of things, each athlete PRed in all the events that they ran. Parker Snow had a big day PRing in the 1600m and 3200m placing 3rd in both events. Joel Conway ran a gutsy race against a tough competitor from Kearney and earned 2nd place overall. Carson lowered his PRs in the 800m and 1600m. The highlight of the night was Chloe Bloom's series in the discus ring. Even with cold weather and a crosswind from the left, Chloe launched the disc 130'1" for a huge PR. That throw currently ranks her #1 in the state for Class 4 and #4 in the state of MO overall. I am looking forward to see what she can do when warmer weather and favorable winds come our way. On the distance side of thinks I would like to recognize the hard work and effort put forth by Evan Jacobs. Evan has steadily improved his 1600m times this season running 5:05, 5:02, and 5:01. He had a goal of breaking through the 5 minute barrier. With help from Fatino, Evan found the perfect pace and eclipsed the barrier by running 4:55. He came back an hour later and won the 3200m by almost a full minute breaking straight through the 11 minute barrier with a finishing time of 10:51. The Kearney Classic is one of the most competitive meets that our varsity team travels to. Our distance team rose to the level of competition with nearly all of our athletes PRing and competing near the front of their races. Jerod Rottinghaus moved closer to his pursuit of a school record. He is currently 5 seconds away from the 1600m school record and 10 seconds away from the 3200m school record. Landon Fatino opened his 3200m career with a strong showing of 10:14.93. That time currently ranks him 3rd in the state among freshman. Tobin and Desmond both PRed in the 800m helping our goal to obtain a KU Relays qualifying DMR. The Roosters and Chicks competed in 28 events and came away with 9 PRs in total.

There were six PRs coming from the distance events but the highlight of the meet for me was Carson Case in the 3200m run. He had superb pacing keeping laps 2-7 all within 3 seconds of each other. To top that off, he through in a 94 second lap to break 13 minutes. Other interesting notes: just two weeks ago Carson ran 6:19 for the 1600m. Yesterday, Carson went through 1600m in 6:26 and followed it up with a 6:28 second mile. His time of 12:55 was 1 minute and 46 seconds faster than his 2-mile PR in cross country.
