On Saturday our athletes headed to Marshall, MO for the Class 3 District 7 championships. The boys were favorites to win the team title but needed to execute at each position to best talented squads from Clinton and Lawson. In the district race, the top 15 individuals advance to the state meet with the top two teams taking all seven of their athletes to Jefferson City.
In the individual battle, the lead pack got out much faster than a typical race as runners tried to place themselves in the coveted 15 spots. Landon, Tobin, and Desmond established their position in that pack early on but the rest of our group remained patient. Just past the two mile mark, Will Pryor and Joel Conway made a large move to join our front three in the top 15. Our qualification to state meet was solidified with our top five runners maintaining their position in the top 15 places of the race. After tallying final scores, the boys came away as District 7 champions with a team score of 43 points. Clinton was 2nd with 66 points. Lawson placed 3rd with 101. Individually, Landon Fatino (2nd), Desmond Ewing (5th), and Tobin Wise (7th) earned 1st team all-district honors. Will Pryor (14th) was 2nd team all-district. The Roosters will travel as a team to Jefferson City for the 8th time in program history. Due to illness, the Chicks squad was unable to place as a complete team but it did not hold our girls back from giving the race their best effort. Aubrey Scott battled with the chase pack throughout the first 2.5 miles of the race before fading to 8th place. She earned second team all-district and will be traveling to state for the second year in a row. Megan Swinney, Tanner Reffitt, and Zoe Crockett each ended their season with strong performances that would have been personal best times had it not been for their efforts earlier in the year at Warrensburg. Each of those three girls have made significant improvements throughout the year and brought a positive attitude and determination to practice every day. The state meet will be contested on Saturday, November 3rd at the Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City. JV bested the varsity score winning with 31 points to Lawson's 43. Dakota Middleton was individual JV Champion. Other Medalist - Carson 3rd, Caden 5th, Morgan 7th, Parker E. 15th, Jackson 17th, Johnathan 19th. Our JV girls both medaled with Tanner R. placing 7th and Zoe placing 16th. Megan cut nearly 2 minutes from last years time to place 38th in the varsity division. Proud of this team for their hard work and dedication this season. Next Saturday we race at Districts in Marshall to determine state qualifiers. This year’s race dynamic was different than previous years in that the west championship was decided within a larger invitational containing other non-conference schools. All teams competed together and then the computer removed the six conference schools to determine all conference awards and accolades.
The JV boys started the day with a spectacular team performance. Keagon Madison and Dakota Middleton pushed each other at the front of the race and set the tone for the rest of the boys to follow. Caden Walker, Carson Case, and Morgan Carlile also earned medals in the invitational race with top 20 performances. Breaking it down by MRVC schools, Keagon and Dakota were the #1 and 2 finishers. Caden, Carson, and Morgan each placed in the top 10 for conference schools. The JV boys’ team dominated the conference schools scoring just 21 points. Warrensburg was 2nd with 51 points. The varsity boys had big shoes to fill in order to repeat what the JV had just accomplished. On paper, Warrensburg were slight favorites going into the race and were running on their home turf. At the mile, Warrensburg boys had a commanding lead with a large portion of their pack going out faster than anticipated. In the second and third miles, our boys who had started out more conservatively were able to maintain their pace and make up ground on the competition. By the 2.5 mile mark, our top 6 athletes had moved into the top 12 MRVC positions almost assuring victory. After separating out the MRVC schools, Pleasant Hill boys came away with a second victory of Warrensburg sweeping the varsity and JV divisions. In total, the boys had five all conference performers (Landon Fatino - 2nd, Tobin Wise - 5th, Desmond Ewing - 6th, Will Pryor - 9th, Joel Conway 10th). The varsity girls were running a full strength and with high spirits. Aubrey Scott made her return to the course after injury and led the squad with a 3rd place finish against MRVC schools. Megan Swinney, Tanner Reffitt, Bethany Larkins, and Zoe Crockett all had massive personal records with each of them besting their former times by over a minute! The girls placed 3rd in the MRVC conference behind Warrensburg and Excelsior Springs. In total, the team had 15 personal records, 8 medalist, 6 all-conference performers, and two team championships. This is the second consecutive year that the boys have won the MRVC conference championship and the fifth MRVC championship in program history. This team does a great job of pushing each other in meets and at practice. They rarely complain and are willing to step up to any challenge that comes their way. Their confidence is high and many of them believe that they can continue to push their limits and run new personal bests. I am eager and excited to see their performances next week at Richmond and the following week at the district meet! The course, located at Excelsior Spring’s golf course, features some of the most challenging hills we face as a team.
The emphasis for the varsity boys was to focus on pack running to help improve our five through seven runners. Joel Conway was selected as the pacer for the team with the other runners instructed to stick with him through two miles. We had a pack of five go through the mile together at 5:50. In the second mile, Joel and the pack made their way into the top 15 of the race. At two miles, Landon Fatino and Tobin Wise were let loose to see how many runners they could catch in the final challenging mile. Surprisingly, Fatino was able to catch all but one of his opponents finishing 2nd overall. Tobin Wise made his way up to 5th place, Will Pryor placed 11th, and Joel finished strong in 14th place. Kolton Kincaid rounded out the scoring five with a 22nd place finish. The Rooster’s presence at the front of the field helped them win their second meet in four days. Pleasant Hill scored 45 points ahead of Christ Prep’s 61 points. Lexington, the top ranked team in Class 2, placed third with 81 points. Excelsior Springs was a huge breakthrough for our girl’s squad who ran in the JV division. At the mile, Megan Swinney found her way in 2nd place. She made a strong surge at the start of the second mile to move into first place. She chased the pace care for the next mile a half before getting caught by talented runners from Notre Dame de Sion in the final half mile. Megan placed 3rd overall and narrowly missed her personal best time. It will be exciting to see her improvements on the flat courses at Warrensburg and Richmond. Tanner Reffitt, Bethany Larkins, and Zoe Crockett all started out between 18th and 26th place and used their superior fitness to maintain their pace and attack the hills. When it was all said and done, each of them had moved into the top 14 positions! The JV boys also impressed with a runner up finish from Parker Snow, two other top 10 finishers in Caden Walker and Morgan Carlile, and eight total medalists! It has been exciting watching these athletes continue to improve this season and I am excited to see what they are capable of on flatter courses with cooler weather. Next week we take on our former district rivals at their home course for the MRVC West Championships. Warrensburg comes into the race seeded slightly ahead of our squad but with the right attitude and determination, I believe we can take home our second consecutive conference title.
