After a long, hot, and sunny weekend I am finally home after my sixth state track meet as a coach. I am incredibly proud of the efforts of our athletes this Saturday as they gave it their all in Jefferson City. More important than their performances this weekend was the road that they took to get there. I encourage underclassmen and returning athletes to observe the commitment, work, and perseverance made by these athletes. Each of them have spent countless hours honing their skills in the off-season, learning their sport and how to improve, setting and striving to reach new goals, working overtime in the weight room, effectively resting and recovering, and finding passion in what they do. I challenge you to make similar commitments and look forward to seeing you follow and surpass these great role models that competed at this year’s 2018 state track and field competition.

Overall, the team had a fantastic day at the Class 4 Sectional Meet. We came away with two sectional champions, five state qualifiers, and three school records.
Jerod Rottinghaus looked impressive in the 1600m by establishing position early and making a strong move with 300m to go. His time of 4:26.42 eclipsed Matt Haffner’s 1600m record of 4:26.8. Two hours later, Jerod toed the line for the 3200m run. The top four athletes cruised through the first mile in 4:51 breaking apart the pack and allowing Jerod to qualify in both distance events. Jerod now holds the fastest 1600m and 3200m in school history with a great opportunity to improve to improve both marks at next week’s state meet. Allee Brattin won her first varsity high school meet of her career by putting the shot 36 feet 5 inches. Lauren Redwine threw 34 feet 7 inches to qualify to state in the 4th position. In addition, Jared Clapp put the shot 48 feet 3.5 inches to earn 3rd in a tight field of competitors. Brady Schlesener came into the event ranked 8th out of 8 in the boys’ javelin but threw a big PR extending his school to 144’10”. That mark earned him 6th place. Lauren Redwine had a superb series putting multiple throws over her former school record. She bested the returning state champion as well as the conference champion to win the sectional meet with a school record throw of 133’9”. Humid air and zero wind limited the distance in the discus throw but Chloe Bloom was able to launch one 122’7” to earn 2nd place. Aubrey Scott, Desmond Ewing, Tobin Wise, Garrett Schick, and Jessica Ross each gained valuable experience competing at such a high level. Although their seasons ended earlier than they had hoped, I am confident that they will return in future years to set school records of their own. At districts, the top four competitors in each event move on to the sectional meet. Our district combines with district 8 for the sectional meet where the top 4 finishers there move on to the state meet. We knew that the competition would be tough with our district containing perennial powerhouse schools such as Grandview, Grain Valley, Warrensburg, and Raytown South. Much of the early morning highlights took place in the field with some big throws and even a new school record by Brady Schlesener in the Javelin. Other qualifiers in the field events include Garrett Schick in the Long Jump, Lauren Redwine in the Shot Put and Javelin, Allee Brattin in the Shot Put, and Chloe Bloom (the district champion) in the discus. Fortunately cloud cover protected the athletes from the scorching heat that was forecasted. Still, hot temperatures and a STRONG wind ripping down the homestretch made it difficult for athletes all athletes on the track. The highlight of the meet from the distance side of things took place in the boys 800m dash. Going into to race, Desmond Ewing was ranked 4th with a personal best time of 2:06.32. Freshman, Tobin Wise, was ranked 8th with a personal best time of 2:10.28. The leaders of the race set a fast pace splitting the 200m out in under 30 seconds. Desmond wisely trailed slightly behind the leaders with Tobin doing his best to hang on to the pace behind Des. At 450m the pace slowed slightly bringing Desmond back in contact with the leaders. Desmond made a big move with 300m to go to catch up to the pack and made an inside pass around 200m to go. The #1 seed in the event moved inside to cut off Desmond’s pass causing both athletes to stumble. Desmond was able to stay upright but the #1 seed fell to the inside of the track and did not finish the race. After gaining his balance, Desmond ran Belton’s top athlete to the line earning 2nd place and missing out on the win by .1 seconds. Desmond’s time of 2:01.77 was a big PR. In the aftermath of the chaos caused by the fall, Tobin who had trailed the lead pack the whole race found an opening and saw himself in 5th place. His final 70m was an all-out sprint as he tried to will himself into 4th and final qualifying spot. The finish for 4th was so close that two coaches from other schools stated that the Grain Valley athlete had placed 4th with Tobin in 5th. I told Tobin the disappointing news and that he would have his shot in the event next year. Later in the meet, the announcer called the results of the boys 800m and to my surprise, Tobin was read as finishing 4th place! Tobin ran 2:04.01, which is a massive PR in an event of that distance. The GV athlete who crossed the line with Tobin was given a time of 2:04.09. I am proud of each and every one of the athletes who ran at districts. Countless hours and hundreds of miles went into making this journey possible. Both qualifiers and non-qualifiers put forth their best effort and laid it all out on the track. Best of luck to the athletes competing at next week’s district meet and a well-deserved rest is due for athletes who have completed their season. Overall, the boys earned a plaque for placing 2nd as a team. The Chicks fought hard and earned 4th. Pleasant Hill had conference champions in seven events combining both sides (Desmond Ewing in the 800m, Jerod Rottinghaus in the 1600m, Jared Clapp in the Shot Put, Brady Schlesener in the Javelin, Garrett Schick in the Triple Jump, Aubrey Scott in the 3200m, and Chloe Bloom in the discus). On top of that Pleasant Hill had four runner ups (Boys 4x800m, Boys 4x400m, Jerod Rottinghaus in the 3200m, and Aubrey Scott in the 1600m). Finishing out the 3rd place medalist were Lauren Redwine in the Shot Put, Lauren Redwine in the Javelin, and Olivia Trask in the Triple Jump. There were 11 PRs with most of them coming from huge gains in the throwing events. Jerod Rottinghaus broke an MRVC Conference Record by winning the fastest and deepest field in MRVC history.
Pleasant Hill scored in 37 events both on the track and in the field. This was largely attributed to athletes who stepped up by competing in multiple events and accepting the responsibility of running new races at the end of the season. Shout outs to Aubrey Scott for racing the mile, 800m, and 3200m. RJ Hughes for the 4x200m, 400m, 200m, and 4x400m. Tobin Wise for the 4x800m, 4x100m, 400m, and 4x400m. Frosh Winfree, Stidham, and Wise running in the first sprint relays P Hill has fielded this season.
