We took a small crew to the Odessa Invite but came away with some big results. Three out of our four milers came away with PRs. Angela McCormick shaved off 10 seconds lowering her time almost 2 minutes from the start of the season. Freshman Caden Walker continues to improve by taking off one to two seconds at a time. Joel Conway, in what might be his last high school mile of his career, ran a huge PR breaking 5:20 for the first time.
Both Ben Cox and Austin Tye performed well in their field events improving marks in the Shot Put and the Triple Jump, respectively. Our team had near perfect weather conditions at the Joe Falcon Invitational in Belton, MO. This meet was a great opportunity for our squads to up their intensity and prepare for the MRVC Conference meet being held at Harrisonville this upcoming Friday. We had 8 personal records across sprints, distance, throws, and the vault. Additionally, a handful of athletes had huge season bests showing that they are fit and ready to go for the next few meets. In the distance races, our 1600m boys put together solid performances. Landon Fatino made improvements in his time by running 4:45. Freshman Caden Walker showed great promise by lowering his time 8 seconds to 5:15. Ben Cox excelled in the throwing rings PRing in both the discus and shot put. On the track, Lindsey Dobson joined Jessica Ross with a sub 50 second finish in the 300m hurdles. Averee Brattin continued to have a successful senior campaign placing first in the 400m dash. Due to errors in their timing system and data entry, results are less than perfect. I have been in contact with their athletic director trying to get results corrected but they are far from correct in many of the distance races and at least one throwing event. At Holden both Kelly Anderson and Colin Paris PRed in the 1600m run. Colin broke 6 minutes for the first time! Kylie Campbell, Mason Smith, and Johnathan Rivera all PRed in their 400m dashes. At the Kearney meet, Brady Schlesener and Allee Brattin made huge improvements in their throwing events. The JV meet at Smithville was a good example for the leaps that can be made through consistent and focused training.
Megan Swinney looked great in her 3200m debut running a PR of 15:12.1. That time is one minute and 46 seconds faster than her season opener from cross country last fall. Carson Case also showed great fitness and pacing by earning an 8th place point and lowering 51 seconds off of his PR to run 12:04.9. In the 1600m run, the highlight of the evening was Angela McCormick who has shown tremendous improvement throughout this season. In her first attempt at the mile earlier this year, she ran 9 minutes and 21 seconds. This evening, she exceeded all expectations by skipping straight past the 8 minute threshold to run 7 minutes and 58 seconds! Newcomer Colin Paris was also able to shave off 10 seconds from his best time to run 6:00.4 seconds. He will chase a sub 6 time in his next attempt at the Holden Invitational this Friday. Other PRs include our freshman sprinters, Jackson Hunt and Johnathan Rivera who both set best times in the 100m dash. Clay Froehlich and Evan Howell had a successful day in the field taking down PRs in the long jump and Clay extending his mark in the triple jump. Christina Morris cleared her first pole vault bar this season with a vault of 6 feet and also lengthened her PR in the long jump. The top performers from the meet were Caden Walker (2nd in the 1600m) and Joel Conway (3rd in the 1600m). In total, the team racked up 23 personal records (PRs) and one school record! Jessica Ross continued her highly successful season by winning the 300m hurdles in school record time. Her 47.61 seconds smashed the long-standing record of 48.3 originally set by both A Dwyer (1996) and T Riggs (2003). Jessica Ross’s 47.61 300m hurdle time ranks her 3rd in the state among Class 4 athletes so far this year. In the distance events, Joel Conway (3200m) and Landon Fatino (1600m) both brought home gold medals from their home track. Caden Walker improved his 1600m best by over 15 seconds to 5:23.9. In the girl’s 1600m, Aubrey Scott used an outstanding kick to make a bid for first but was outleaned in the final stride. Her time of 5:48 was a season best. Behind her, both Kelly Anderson and Megan Swinney set PRs with each of them breaking 7 minutes for the first time. Shae Swaney competed in her first ever 800m and earned bronze for her efforts. The light breeze and good weather blowing at the backs of jumpers helped make for some great performances in the field. Garrett Schick improved both of his noteworthy PRs in the long jump (21-11.5) and the triple jump (43-7). Lindsey Dobson also increased her PRs in both the horizontal jumps placing 4th and 5th in each event. Ben Cox (1st) and Brady Schlesener (2nd) both set personal records in the discus while Chloe Bloom launched a season best of 131-4 to win the event.
