The 3rd Annual High Altitude Camp is in the books. Eight athletes took to Colorado and were able to participate in several activities. This year's camp was located on Lake Dillon near Frisco, CO. We ran on the trailed, played ultimate frisbee, and hiked to waterfalls nearby. We swam at the local rec center, climbed their pool rock wall and took advantage of their large hot tub. On day three, 7 of our athletes and one chaperone made it up Mount Evans (14,285 feet) and we relaxed later that day in Idaho Springs. On day four the athletes spent the day at Copper Mountain riding mountain coasters, climbing rock walls, doing back flips on bungee trampolines, running through a ninja warrior course, and riding up a ski lift. For day five we attempted the Grays and Torreys Combo (14,278 feet). Unfortunately dangerous snowy conditions at 13,700 feet prompted us to turn around. The rest of the afternoon was spent playing knock out basketball at the rec center, more swimming, climbing, an evening trip to Breckenridge, and then dinner at the famous Leadville Quinceys. Our last day included an early morning run at the lake, a trip to CO School of Mines Geology Museum, a picnic in Golden, and a tour of Hammonds Candy Factory.
Per tradition, the trip concluded with the bear run which is a 4.25 mile "race" in Burlington, CO (4,170 feet elevation). Due to warm temperatures, us an Ray-Pec opted for a 6:15am start time. Landon Fatino was the top Pleasant Hill finisher. He was 3rd overall running 25:21, a time which places him on the coveted "all-time list" (a collection of sub 26:00 minute performances). Megan Swinney improved her time by 3 minutes and 47 seconds from last year and has cut 11 minutes and 38 seconds from her first attempt in 2017! Carson Case also recorded a new best shaving off 56 seconds. The sectional track meet started with a slew of weather delays for lightning. Among the chaos of the weather were other inconveniences which made our athletes overcome adversity. For one, our throwing implements were not weighed and cleared for competition despite being delivered to the weigh in location 15 minutes early.
This put Ben Cox in a tricky situation as he was required to use a discus from another school that he had never thrown before. However, Ben did not show any signs of distress as he launched a throw of 148-11 to earn second place and a ticket to the state meet. Following a protest, the implements were weighed and returned in time for the other throwing events. On a wet ring, Allee Brattin had a solid throw of 37-9.5. This mark placed her in 4th for the first three rounds of competition. In the fourth and final round, two girls threw beyond the 37-9.5 mark dropping Allee to 6th place and out of a qualifying mark for state. Brady Schlesener had an outstanding series in the Javelin. In the third round, he threw 146-10 to break his own school record and moved himself into 4th place in the event. He upped the stakes in the last round lengthening his school record to 149-1. Unfortunately, an Excelsior Springs athlete out threw Brady on his 4th and final throw dropping Brady to 5th place. Chloe Bloom faced some nervous moments as she sat in the 4th place position and watched one of the top ranked discus throwers make her final throw. Fortunately for Chloe, the Sion athlete fouled on her final throw leaving Chloe in the 4th position and advancing her to the state meet. Her throw at sectionals was 118-8. This will be Chloe’s third trip to the state meet. I was not present to watch Ben Cox’s round in the discus but he threw 43-4 for 8th place. On the track, Jessica Ross got things rolling with a personal record in the 100m hurdles. Her time of 16.45 earned her 7th place in a highly competitive race. Her next event was the 300m hurdles. Our sectional contained 5 of the top 10 ranked athletes in the state for that event with only four of them advancing to the state meet. Jessica was running in 5th position for most of the race but was able to find a spectacular burst of speed over the final hurdler. She drove hard and edged out one of last year’s all-state 300m hurdlers earning 4th place. Her time of 45.67 was .73 seconds faster than her own school record which she has continued to break throughout the year. In that same race, Lindsey Dobson continued to show her consistency and improvement in the event by placing 6th in 48.01. Sophomore Tobin Wise competed for the second consecutive year in the 800m dash. He ran a phenomenal race and stuck with the leaders over the first 500m of the race. With 150m to go it seemed that he was going to place 4th and earn his first trip to the state track and field championships. A runner from Ray-South found a strong kick and moved past Tobin who faded to fifth place in the final 40m. Tobin ran a 2 second personal record and lowered his time to 2:02.49. To show how competitive our district is: Tobin’s time would have won two other sectional meets and would have qualified him in the other. Next year, he has his eyes set on the school record and a trip to the state meet. As Landon Fatino was stepping onto the track, lightning once again postponed the event. However, this time, the event was suspended until Monday. This delay completely changed the dynamic of the race as five of the eight 2-mile athletes had events earlier in the day and would have been running less than 100%. The extra days rest made for one of the most competitive 2-mile fields that I have watched. Landon came through the first two laps faster than his mile best and was still in 7th place. He fought hard and maintained contact with the 4th position but was unable to close that gap. His efforts earned him a 6th place finish and a fantastic personal record of 9:55.46 for the 2-mile distance. At the district meet, an athlete must place in the top 4 positions to continue their season and move on to the sectional track meet. This year, we had 8 athletes qualify in 10 different events. Several of the athletes who did not qualify finished their season on a high note by running at or near their personal best.
This years sectional qualifiers are listed below: 100m Hurdles Jessica Ross 300m Hurdles Jessica Ross 300m Hurdles Lindsey Dobson 3200m Landon Fatino 800m Tobin Wise Discus Ben Cox Discus Chloe Bloom Javelin Brady Schlesener Shot Put Allee Brattin Shot Put Ben Cox These athletes will meet the top four finishers from the Class 4 District 8 meet. This gave our JV athletes one final opportunity to earn personal best times and also allowed for our kids to try some events that they had never done before.
Due to the small size of the meet, there was limited rest time between each race but that did not stop our kids from performing near the highest level. Eleven of the 25 performances recorded were personal best times. However, at meets like conference, each individual athlete contributes their efforts towards the greater good of the team. Points can be earned by placing in the top 6 for an event with a scale of 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1. Relay points total 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and are awarded to the top 5 teams.
Each year we set our season's focus on performing well at the conference meet. To maximize points, many of our athletes take on roles that are outside of their norm or load up with as many as four events. Coming in to the meet, our boys were ranked 3rd in the MRVC West and our girls were ranked 2nd. When it was all said and done, both the Roosters and Chicks earned 3rd place. We knew that an injury to this year's high point scorer, Jessica Ross, would be tough to overcome. However, our girls fought hard and narrowly missed the 2nd place trophy by 7.5 points. On the girl's side, Lindsey Dobson was the most valuable athlete. She set personal records in the Long Jump, Triple Jump, 300m Hurdles, and also led off our conference champion 4x200m relay. In total, she made up 24.5 total points. On the boy's side, senior Brady Schlesener led the Roosters scoring 16 points in the discus, shot put, and javelin. In total, their were 26 PRs set! Due to errors in their timing system and data entry, results are less than perfect. I have been in contact with their athletic director trying to get results corrected but they are far from correct in many of the distance races and at least one throwing event. Feel free to view them at the following link but take some of them with a grain of salt: https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/MeetResults.aspx?Meet=368458&show=all
On Monday, our JV traveled back to Harrisonville. Running events were fired off more smoothly and there were less drastic errors (still incorrect times in the 1600m and 800m but I have used my personal timing in the results below and not the incorrect camera times).
